Taylor Swift may only be 21-years-old, but she sure knows how to entertain a crowd. Taylor visited Wells Fargo Arena on Sunday. From the beginning to the end, it was like we were watching a theatrical performance, and not just a concert.
Luckily I did not have to work much during the show, so I was able to just sit up in the press box live tweet away.
Taylor started with a bang, and ended with a bang. She began the concert with Sparks Fly and used plenty of pyro during the song. Some dancers dropped from the ceiling holding giant sparklers as they were lowered, definitely not something I had seen before. She closed out the concert singing Love Story, my personal favorite song of hers. She actually got into a little square balcony (remember the music video, anyone?) and it took her into the air and on a trip around the arena. She was about eye level with those in the upper bowl, and yeah, Ill admit it, I even waved to her from the press box!
I’ve seen her perform on numerous award shows and on TV appearances, but never for an entire concert. What I think a concert really shows you about her is just how talented of a musician she is. She played 4 different instruments – a guitar, a banjo for You Belong with Me, a ukulele during Fearless, and a piano during Back To December. She really got into each song too. Each was more like a Broadway act than a concert. Even her band got into the act, dressing up like her and the rest of the dancers when the song called for it.
Aside from being such a great performer, I also kept hearing how genuinely nice she was to everyone at the arena. Before the show, she hosted a number of VIPs and contest winners backstage where they were treated to a display of some of her most famous dresses, along with a description of where she wore them. The room they convened in was like out of a mystical fairytale. Very whimsical, very pink, drapes all around – very Taylor. You wouldn’t even recognize it as one of our Hy-Vee Hall meeting rooms.
The staff got her a white guitar strap with all of her song titles written in brown across it as a thank you gift for another sold out show. When we went backstage to give it to her, not only did she give our general manager a hug, she was genuinely thankful for the strap. See the picture below! Her mom was even backstage and treated some of the lucky guests who got to go backstage to a backstage tour. How often can you say that happened?
All in all it was a great night, and everyone seemed to go home happy. You can see some of the pictures we took from around Wells Fargo Arena Sunday night!
